AATMAS (Alumni Association of the Madras Sanskrit College)

AATMAS was founded in the year 2005 by Dr.N.V.Deviprasad Principal, Madras Sanskrit College. The Centenary Celebrations of the Alma-Mater was celebrated for two days 5th & 6th February 2005 at the Madras Sanskrit College in a novel way. As part of the Centenary celebrations the first Seminar was held on 06.02.2015 on "Vedas and its Relevance Today". On that day, for the first time in India, a unique competition, "Veda Anthyakshari" was held in which more than 150 Vedic students from various parts of India below the age of 20 have participated. The Vedic students, who won the prizes were given cash awards along with certificates.

The second seminar was held on 05.03.2005 and the subject dealt with was "Vedaangas". Sanskrit Scholars who have specialized in the subjects viz. Siksha, Vyakarana, Chandas, Niruktam, Jyotisham, and Kalpa have participated and were honoured.

Veda-Anthyakshari competition for juniors (below 15) was conducted on 06.03.2005 in which noted Vedic Scholars were the judges for the competition. More than 250 young Vedapatashala students from different parts of India have participated. The judges were honoured and the students who won the prizes were given cash awards of Rs. 2,000/-, Rs. 1,500/-, Rs. 1,000/-, Rs. 500/-, Rs.300/-.

The third function was held on 9.4.2005 to celebrate 105th Birthday of our oldest living Alumnus − Master of all Sastras and personification of Vyakarana Brahmasri. T.Ramachandra Sastri, who was older than the college, and was conferred "Sastra Ratnakara" by Kanchi Acharya, helped us by his guidance in our activities at the age of 104. Concerning his age, the function was arranged at Sriperumbudur where Sri Sastrigal was living.

The fourth function was a seminar on "Mimamsa Sastra". Similarly many events were held for the past nine years.The 110 years old Madras Sanskrit College has produced thousands of Sanskrit scholars, who are known for their Sastric knowledge and are working in various Universities and other Institutions across the country. Some of the Alumni are also doing service to the Sanskrit language abroad.

Alumni Association of the Madras Sanskrit College Called as AATMAS has organized its 10th year celebrations in the divine presence of Pujya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamiji and Pujya Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamiji of Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt on 24.05.2015 at the College premises.

The election of office bearers of AATMAS was held prior to the function.

The Principal welcomed the Alumni and public. Dr.Umesh Nepal, Asst.Professor of Sahitya, Jagadguru Ramananda Sanskrit University, Jaipur, an Alumnus, spoke about the activities of AATMAS. The main event of the function was Honouring 10 senior Alumni by Pujya Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamiji on behalf of AATMAS. The scholars aged between 70s to 90s were conferred with "KALASALA RATNAM" (Gem of the College). There was also a farewell function for the retiring Principal Dr.N.V.Deviprasad. Pujya Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamiji honoured the Prinicpal with Shawl and Prasad. The Secretary of the College Shri.V.Srikanth spoke about the achievements of the college in detail.

Pujya Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamiji have given an "Anugrah Bhashan" tracing the connection of Mutt with the college and the service rendered by the Alumni in the field of Sastras, Sanskrit and Indian culture upholding the Vedic tradition. The college is the centre of sastric learning which attracted and is attracting a number of students from different parts of India from Nepal to Kanyakumari. Swamiji also stressed the benefits of learning Sanskrit in the present day life. One must learn Sanskrit to uphold the Vedic tradition, the Dharma and pass it on to the next generation. He was also quoting the Kalidasa´s famous sloka "Saraswathi Shrutimahatee Maheeyataam".

After the Anugrah Bhashan, a Sanskrit play "Maitreem Bhajata" which was written and directed by the Principal was enacted by the Alumni. There was also a Carnatic music concert by Shri.V.Navneet Krishnan who was also an Alumnus of the College. Some of the Alumni gave acceptance speech.

The programme ended with "Vedic Shanthi Paata". The function was a great success with the blessings of Goddess Saraswathi and the Acharyas of Kanchi Mutt.
